Georgia Public Broadcasting, announcing Tuesday that it has formed a new sports division, will debut GPB Sports Central tonight at 7:30 on Channel 8 and its HD channel, a 30-minute program on high school sports. Formerly named Prep Sports Plus, the show is an exciting, fast-paced look at breaking news stories, features, recruiting and polls from around the state. The show will replay Fridays at 11 p.m. with final high school football scores, and Saturdays at Noon with final scores and game news. The show features veteran sports reporters Gil Tyree, Mark Harmon, Jon Nelson and newcomer and Atlanta Falcons Georgia Dome personality Niki Noto.

Tonight’s show includes: an exclusive report and highlight on the controversial ending to the Peachtree Ridge-McEachern game at Saturday’s Corky Kell Classic; the story behind the consecutive state championship runs being made by Class 5A Camden County and Class 2A Buford; an interview with former Brookwood High School coach and athletics director Dave Hunter on the recent realignment of teams in the Georgia High School Association; a feature on volleyball powerhouse Pope and whether they can win back-to-back volleyball titles in a state very competitive when it comes to the dig; a Falcons minute with quarterback Matt Ryan, who talks about his favorite high school moment; and a fun exchange between brothers Keith and Kevin Maloof, whose teams played over the weekend.

The executive producer of show is Score Atlanta president I.J. Rosenberg, who also serves as the network’s sports director. The show is followed Wednesday night from 8-9 by Sports Central XL, a live video chat on GPB.org/sports featuring interviews with Georgia High School coaches mixing it up with bloggers, writers and fans. Tonight on XL will be North Gwinnett coach Bob Sphire, a Gwinnett doctor talking about the new concussion rule, South Georgia radio voice Tommy Palmer and Collins Hill coach Bruce Reach will break down Friday night’s GPB/Score Atlanta webcast of the week which features the Eagles hosting Roswell.
