With Educational Programs Canceled, Loop It Up Savannah Sends Activity Kits To Kids

When the nonprofit arts and enrichment program Loop It Up Savannah realized that their regularly scheduled programming was going to fall apart for the foreseeable future, Executive Director Molly Lieberman realized they needed to shift gears — fast.
“We realized we weren’t going to have any of the special events we’ve planned,” Lieberman said. “So, what can we be doing to stay connected to our students and contribute in a positive way?”
So, Lieberman and her team at Loop It Up Savannah decided to launch their new #ArtSmartActivityKits initiative, which provides kids around Chatham County with personal kits chock-full of enrichment activities.
They’re packed with sketchbooks, colored pencils, markers, crayons, books of different reading levels, and a personal note from someone in the community who helped package the kit.
The seeds for the idea began when Lieberman attended a party just before social distancing went into effect, and started chatting with Savannah Mayor Van Johnson.
He joked with her about transitioning to virtual crafts.
“We were laughing about it, but I thought, you know, we really need to do something, because we don’t want to be just one more thing that’s not happening as normal in young people’s lives,” Johnson said.
People from all over the country have donated items to go into these kits, Lieberman said.
“Even though this is a really horrible, stressful time, this is also, in some ways, bringing out the very best in us," she said.
She also emphasized that the kits are just one way for the team at Loop It Up Savannah to stay connected with their students.
“We just want our students to know that we’re thinking about them and we love them, we’re sad that we’re not with them — we miss them,” she said. “And, we want our kids to know, there’s this huge team of people that care about them and want them to feel as okay as possible in a really stressful time.”
