Communities Gather To Support Health Care Workers

Cheering and honking their car horns, hundreds of people filled the evening air with appreciation for local healthcare workers on the front lines of the coronavirus battle at the Newnan Piedmont Hospital, as has happened many nights in cities worldwide.
More than 200 cars filled almost every parking spot in the lot. Some had hazard lights cutting through the evening light, others had music blaring and there were even more supportive messages written on signs.
“We were in the parking lot and they [nurses and doctors] came out of the front of the emergency room area. Just to see them standing there and everyone else's energy around it was like a shift,” said Coweta County resident Abba Parrott.
It's an emotionally draining time and the hospital has received an influx of donated food, supportive notes and cards, candy and hand sewn medical masks, hospital CEO Mike Robertson said.
The event was organized by two retired nurses, Courtney Hatlee and Maria Carroll LaPage, who posted in online community Facebook groups and the message quickly spread.
Piedmont Newnan is not the only hospital in Georgia where this type of support has been shown to those on the front lines. Similar public displays have happened in Albany at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Braselton and at WellStar West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
“Just to stand with us out there and let our staff and our folks come to the window, our patients come to the window, and just see that we are not alone. That's probably the biggest thing, is that you're not alone through this,” said Robertson.
