Sen. Johnny Isakson is set to deliver his farewell speech Tuesday afternoon from the floor of the U.S. Senate.

The three-term Republican is the only Georgian to be elected in the state House and Senate and the U.S. House and Senate and has served for 45 years in elected office.

He announced earlier this fall he was stepping down at the end of 2019 because of health concerns.

Chairman of the Senate Ethics Committee, Isakson's legacy has been lauded by both sides of the aisle as a moderating influence and statesman .

In a seven-minute video released last week, former and current colleagues heaped praise on a man known as a "compassionate, honest and bridge-building public servant," his office noted.

"He will always be remembered for honest and integrity, and setting an example of intellectual honesty for a younger generation of people who are going to be our leaders tomorrow," former Georgia Democratic Sen. Sam Nunn said.

Both of Georgia's Senate seats will be on the ballot next fall. Gov. Brian Kemp will announce Isakson's replacement tomorrow morning. That person will have to run in a special election in November. Sen. David Perdue is up for re-election as well.
