Voters in Coweta County and a small part of Fayette County head to polls Tuesday to vote for the next representative of state House District 71.

The contest to replace Rep. David Stover features four candidates: three Republicans and one Democrat.

Nina Blackwelder, Marcy Sakrison and Philip Singleton all hope to be the next Republican representative to claim the seat. Jill Prouty is the only Democrat in the race.

The seat became available when Stover announced his resignation in June — he was first elected to the seat in 2013 and has served since. Stover says he is stepping down to spend more time with his family.

If no individual candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, a runoff election will be held Oct. 1.

The next representative will complete Stover’s term and will likely run for re-election in 2020.
