Karen Abbott's new book "The Ghosts of Eden Park"

A crafty bootlegger ranking in millions, corrupt feds, early feminists and flappers are the things that made HBO’s Boardwalk Empire a hit.

Karen Abbott's new books is all that plus the real-life murder trial that gripped jazz-age America.

On Second Thought host Virginia Prescott speaks with Karen Abbott.

Abbott combed through piles of records and news accounts and 5,000 plus pages of court transcripts for background on her new book, The Ghosts of Eden Park: The Bootleg King, the Women Who Pursued Him, and the Murder That Shocked Jazz-Age America.

The Ghosts of Eden Park follows George Remus, known in his day as “King of the Bootleggers.” Before he was sent to federal prison in Atlanta, Remus controlled 35% of the country’s illegal booze trade and had the U.S. attorney general on his payroll.

In fact, Remus’ fate was in a plotline on Boardwalk Empire.

Karen Abbott is among the writers featured in the AJC Decatur Book festival this Labor Day weekend. She will be at the Atlanta History Center on Aug. 28 and at the Gwinnett County Public Library Aug. 30.

On Second Thought talked to Abbott to learn more of the gripping and true story of George Remus.
