For Latinos, living through current events in modern-day America can be incredibly stressful.

Sources of stress include the Trump administration's practice of separating children from their parents at the U.S. border and the ever-looming threat of deportation for many undocumented migrants.

Latino counselors say the stigma around mental health can be particularly strong in their community.

According to the Office of Minority Health, Hispanics receive mental health treatment at half the rate that whites do.

In Athens, one University of Georgia professor has started a program where his students offer mental health services to the Hispanic community.

Edward Delgado-Romero is a professor of Counseling Psychology in the College of Education at UGA.

He created a program for bilingual graduate students to offer counseling free of charge to those who might otherwise never receive it.

GPB's Leah Fleming spoke with Professor Romero to discuss the program and how the hispanic community can be better served when it comes to mental health treatment.
