A study published in the medical journal JAMA Pediatrics found that African American children under the age of 12 are taking their lives at roughly twice the rate of their white counterparts.

It also found that children who had a mental health problem at the time of death were more likely to have been misdiagnosed with attention-deficit disorder.
The late author Bebe Moore Campbell worked with the US House of Representatives 11 years ago to establish July as Minority Mental Health Awareness month.
One woman who is very familiar with the struggle of mental illness and the stigma around it is music industry veteran Shanti Das.
She’s an Atlanta native who works as an advocate with her group, the Hip-Hop Professional Foundation.
