Wildfire On Federally Protected Cumberland Island Under Control
Primary Content
A wildfire burning on Cumberland Island is 85% contained, according to the National Park Service.
A June 29 lightning strike started the Whitney Fire.
The fire burned some 350 acres by the Fourth of July, and has burned another 68 acres since then, bringing the total scorched area to 418.
The Southern Area Gray Incident Management Team had on the scene more than 50 people, a helicopter and five engines, but will now hand control over to a local unit.
Park officials said no trail closures have been lifted and a number of roads on the island remain closed.
