The 2016 film Hidden Figures highlights black female mathematicians who battled racial and gender discrimination to help the National Aeronautics and Space Administration or NASA launch its Apollo missions to the moon.

An Atlanta native, single mom and Georgia State University doctoral student will follow in their footsteps this summer.

On Second Thought host Virginia Prescott speaks with India Jackson.

India Jackson was accepted to NASA's prestigious internship program, but she had only one problem: money. The stipend offered wouldn't cover travel and living expenses for Jackson and her daughter, Jewel.

That's when strangers from around the world stepped in — raising more than $8,000 on GoFundMe to help fulfill Jackson's dreams.

Jackson spoke with On Second Thought host Virginia Prescott about her NASA internship and long-term goals.

"People work hard for their money," Jackson said. "I got what I needed in order to be comfortable. This is not a cash grab. I chose to be a scientist to make history, not to make money."
