The metro-Atlanta region has landed another major sporting event.
Major League Baseball announced Wednesday, SunTrust Park and the Atlanta Braves will host the 2021 All-Star game.
Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms celebrated the announcement and said her focus is on how the community will benefit.
“When I had the opportunity to talk to Braves leadership about this great opportunity coming to our region, my first question was what will it mean for our communities,” Bottoms said outside of SunTrust Park.
“I was so very glad to hear that in the same spirit that our communities have been uplifted as we celebrated the Super Bowl, we can look for the same impact on our communities in 2021,” she said. “So in the spirit of Atlanta, let’s go Braves, let’s go Major League Baseball.”
Her excitement was echoed by Braves Chairman Terry McGuirk.
“When we built SunTrust Park and The Battery Atlanta, we envisioned our complex would be the perfect setting for an all-star game,” McGuirk said in a press release. “We are thrilled to be able to showcase the ballpark, Cobb County and the city of Atlanta to the world.”
Though the game will be played in Cobb County, it marks a yet another big game coming to the region.
In 2018, Mercedes-Benz Stadium hosted the College Football National Championship, Major League Soccer All-Star Game, and the MLS Cup Final.
This year, Super Bowl 53 was played at the $1.6 billion stadium and in 2020, it’ll host the NCAA Final Four. Atlanta could also play as host city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
2021 will mark the third time in as many stadiums the Braves and metro-Atlanta host the MLB All-Star Game. In 1972, it was Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium before being played at Turner Field in 2000.
