'On Second Thought' For Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2019

Today's show highlighted the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival, the upcoming Savannah Book Festival and the importance of foreign language education for Georgia students.

GPB reporter Stephen Fowler stopped by "On Second Thought" to discuss the State of the Union and former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams' Democratic response. We also heard from Patrick Wallace, program specialist for world languages and global workforce initiatives at the Georgia Department of Education, and Jacques Marcotte with the French-American Chamber of Commerce in Atlanta. They discussed Georgia students' readiness for the global workforce through language learning.

Film evaluation committee co-chair Hazel Gold discussed the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival. The festival starts Feb. 6 and runs through Feb. 26. Filmmaker Shawn Snyder also joined the conversation. His film, "To Dust," starring Matthew Broderick and Géza Röhrig, is featured at the festival.

Finally, we heard from authors Jessica Kensky and Patrick Downes. They were newlyweds and spectators during the 2013 Boston Marathon when the bombing occurred. They both experienced injuries and lost limbs.

Throughout the healing process, they added a new member to their family, a therapy dog named Rescue. He's the subject of their best-selling children's book, "Rescue & Jessica: A Life-Changing Friendship." They stopped by the show to discuss the book and their upcoming appearance at the Savannah Book Festival.
