Long before he made it to Broadway and the silver screen, Leon made a deep impression on Atlanta's arts and culture scene.On Second Thought host Virginia Prescott speaks with Kenny Leon.
As the first African-American artistic director at the Alliance Theatre, Leon staged premieres of Pearl Cleage's "Blues for an Alabama Sky" and Elton John and Tim Rice's musical "Aida."
In 2002, he founded Kenny Leon's True Colors Theatre Company in Atlanta, which is still active today.
Leon's Broadway directorial debut was a revival of Lorraine Hansberry's "A Raisin in the Sun" in 2004. Ten years later, he won a Tony for directing a second revival of the play. More recently, Leon has directed NBC's live stage productions of "The Wiz" and "Hairspray."
Leon's returns to Atlanta next week to speak at the Carter Center about his new memoir, "Take You Wherever You Go." He'll also be the keynote speaker at this year’s AJC Decatur Book Festival.
