 Georgia Congressman Wants End To Subsidized Cell Phones

Georgia Congressman Austin Scott (R GA-08) wants to end a program that offers subsidized, low cost cell phones.

Scott introduced the End Taxpayer Funded Cell Phones Act in late July. It would end an Obama era program which provides basic smart phone service to people with low incomes for $9.25 a month.

In a press release Scott said the Lifeline program is  “riddled with waste, fraud and abuse.” As proof, Scott cited a recent Government Accountability Office Report which estimated Lifeline loses $1.2 million a year on ineligible people. That’s about one hundredth of a percent of the program’s $9 billion fund.  

About 750,000 Georgians use the Lifeline program.
