A New Production Of 'Company' Comes To Atlanta

Musical theater geeks, here’s your heads-up:

On this edition of “Two Way Street,” we’re showcasing one of the seminal Broadway musicals – Stephen Sondheim’s “Company.” The show debuted in April of 1970, and has been revived countless times on Broadway, in London, in Australia and by regional theaters ever since. Now Atlanta’s Actor’s Express Theater is mounting a new production of the show.

We talk about their production – and about the history of “Company” with director Freddie Ashley, musical director Alli Lingenfelter and actors Lowery Brown, who plays the central character Bobby, and the great cabaret singer Libby Whitemore, who plays the featured role of Joanne.

Better yet, we brought Libby and Lowery into the GPB performance studio and asked them to sing for the show! Libby sings one of the signature numbers of “Company,” “The Ladies Who Lunch.”

Later in our show, Libby sings her favorite Sondheim song, “Send in the Clowns.” Lowery sings “Talent,” a song from a little-known Sondheim musical that’s never made it to Broadway.

I’d like to think that this show begun the process of turning Senior Producer Jenny Ament into a Sondheim fan. But whether it does or not, Jenny did a wonderful job weaving music from the Actor’s Express production and songs from other productions of “Company” into “Two Way Show” this week. Thanks, Jenny.
