Georgia College's poll surveyed 500 residents

A new survey examines Georgians' attitudes on the economy, education, and a number of other issues.

Overall, residents surveyed in Georgia College's annual State of the State Poll are optimistic about the state’s future. Just over half said Georgia is moving in right direction. But differences appear when you break down the numbers by region.

South Georgians are concerned about racism and health care. Metro Atlanta residents are more satisfied with the economy than the rest of the state.

“We do see a sense of consistency as it relates to education, even though the Middle and Southern parts expressed greater concerns,” said Dr. Costas Spirou, who oversees the poll.

Nearly 70 percent of North and South Georgia residents surveyed say they’re willing to pay more in taxes to improve education. A little more than half of all Georgians say they support casino gambling.
