Professor Joe Crespino said events from the past are useful lessons for today.

"We have been through incredible divisive times," Crespino said.  "We have faced enormous difficulties before, and I think in that sense history can be a good guide."

Professor Frederick Knight said the differences between then and now are as important as ever to consider.

"The challenge, however, is that there was a stronger constitutional check in the form of a Congress that was strongly tilted towards checking the president," Knight said.
