SoCon Making Noise in FCS Poll

By Score Atlanta - With Georgia Southern leading the way, the Southern Conference is making noise in the FCS coaches poll. With Appalachian State, Wofford and Chattanooga joining the Eagles in the rankings, the SoCon has four teams in the top 25. And, in possibly the biggest game in the FCS this weekend, the No. 3 Mountaineers will face the No. 6 Terriers Saturday in Spartanburg (see Fletcher Proctor’s blog on this game below). … Last weekend, App State defeated Chattanooga 14-12 in a tight, defensive battle. Jeremy Kimbrough picked off a BJ Coleman pass and returned it 46 yards to give the Mountaineers a 14-6 lead early in the fourth quarter. Despite the pick-6, Coleman had a solid day against the stout App State defense while also moving into third place all-time in the Mocs’ record books in passing. Coleman threw for 270 yards and a score. Now 2-2, Chattanooga remains in the top 25 at No. 17. … Top-ranked Georgia Southern, meanwhile, kept rolling along with a dominating 52-20 win over Western Carolina. Long known as a running program, the Eagles had the third-best game in school history totaling 634 rushing yards. Three GSU backs had more than 100 yards led by Ezayi Youyoute’s 119. Robert Brown fell just short of triple digits with 99 rushing yards. … Wofford gained a conference win Saturday at home with a 38-23 over Samford. Like the Eagles, three Terriers ran for more than 100 yards and as a team, Wofford totaled 443 rushing yards. Before pulling away from the Bulldogs in the second half, Wofford led just 17-16 at the break. … In an overtime thriller, Elon edged the Citadel 18-15 as Adam Shreiner booted a 33-yard field goal and the Bulldogs missed a field goal attempt. Shreiner had missed a 44-yard field goal with four seconds left in regulation to send the game to the extra period.
