Memories from Macon And Gwinnett
Primary Content
It has been a week since we crowned basketball champions here in Georgia. What a week it was as it began in Duluth at the Arena at Gwinnett Center with the Miller Grove girls winning their first ever state 4A championship. The Lady Wolverines led by Head Coach Renee Breedlove defeated Kathy Walton's Southwest DeKalb Lady Panthers squad. Miller Grove was not done as the boys ended the Tony Parker era with Back to Back to Back to Back titles. 4 straight championships as the Wolverines became only the third school in GHSA history to accomplish that feat. in 5A girls, The Phyllis Arthur led McEachern Lady Indians capped a 32-oh year by beating Hillgrove. McEachern finished the season as the Number 2 ranked team in the country. And in boys Milton's David Boyd won yet another 5A state championship as they down Savannah. Coach Boyd has led teams to championships at multiple schools now. He has won 601 games. More with Coach Boyd in the GPB Sports Blog, along with his University of Virginia bound star Evan Nolte.
Down in Macon it was Wesleyan becoming a 5-time girls 1A state champion. Head Coach Jan Azar continues to get the job done with the Lady Wolves who show know signs of stepping back despite stepping up in classification starting next year. In boys 1A, Whitfield Academy runs led by University of Georgia bound Kenneth Gaines wins another title capping the year 21 straight victories. In 2A, Liz Kennedy's Lovett Lady Lions roared to the title getting past nemisis Buford, while in boys Augusta's Laney High wins for the first time. Finally in 3A, just like Miller Grove, Columbia's Eagles win both the boys and girls titles. Congrats to both coaches Chantay Frost and Philip McCrary. It marks the second time in three years both and the girls have brought back titles to the Decatur based school.
Finally this week the aforementioned Tony Parker and Southwest DeKalb's William "Shaq" Goodwin were named Georgia representatives to the 2012 McDonald's game, the 35th annual. The 2 join Coach Boyd, and Evan Nolte on the GPB Sports Blog. Parker and Goodwin make history in doing so. They become the first two Georgia McDonald's All-Americans to play again each other in a state championship game. The game will played later this month in Chicago. All in all it was a GREAT week for Georgia High School Basketball. Special to all the great people at GPB, GHSA, school administrators, teachers, students, and parents for a GREAT season. Can't wait for the 2012-2013 season.
