WORKING: Underemployment
Primary Content
Consider this: 16.4 percent of Georgians were underemployed between the third quarter of 2011 and the second quarter of 2012. The U.S. Labor Department computes that rolling average every quarter, along with other numbers like this: 5 percent of Georgians are forced into part-time work because of the economy, though they’d prefer a 40-hour-a-week position.
These numbers got the GPB News team thinking: is it better to be unemployed and, thus, fully focused on the job search (and getting some state help financially and with that search)? Or should you take part-time work if you can find it because then you at least have something to put on your resume?
We put the question to our workplace and career guru Brandon Smith this week on Working on GPB Radio.
