Camden County coach Jeff Herron has a chance to join a group of legendary men. Herron needs nine victories to become the 15th coach to reach 300.

Herron has been the head coach at Walton (1989), Cedar Shoals (1990-1993), Wheeler (1995-96), Oconee County (1997-99), Camden County (2000-12) Price Avenue Christian (2013-15), Grayson (2016), South Carolina’s T.L. Hanna (2017-18) before returning to Camden County last season.

His record at Camden County is 158-25 with 12 region titles and three state championships. He also won state championships at Grayson and Oconee County.

The winningest active coach is Alan Chadwick of Marist, who is 409-75. That’s second only behind the all-time champion Larry Campbell of Lincoln County, who went 477-85-3 in his illustrious career.

No one else is closing in on 300. Jackson County’s Rich McWhorter picked up his 300th win in the final game of the 2021 regular season. The other active GHSA coaches with 200-plus wins are Mark Stroud of Calvary Day (239-107), Maurice Freeman of Brooks County (235-108), Gerry Rhomberg of Westminster (220-131), Ed Dudley of Winder-Barrow (209-115), Frank Barden of St. Francis (207-111-1), Keith Maloof of Norcross (207-92) and Tim McFarlin of Fellowship Christian (206-56-2).

Eric Parker of Burke County and Sid Fritts of Washington-County are both closing in on 200. Parker is 199-99 and Fritts is 192-58-2.

Brian Allison of East Forsyth, Rodney Cofield of McDonough and John Reid of Rome all need two victories to reach No. 150.

East Coweta’s John Small (99), Fayette County’s Nick Davis (98), Westside’s Sheddrick Risper (95), Emanuel County’s Chris Kearson (95), Randolph-Clay’s Charles Truitt (94), Hawkinsville’s Shane Williamson (94), Starr’s Mills’ Chad Phillips (94) Monroe Area’s Kevin Reach (94) and Toombs County’s Richie Maran (93) are all closing in on 100 career wins.
