Make That Kid An Offer

GPB Sports is looking for Georgia high school football players who are having a great season and career but who may need a little help getting noticed by recruiters. If you, or someone you know, doesn’t have an offer or may just be looking for a bigger offer, tell us your story. Here are our nominees for the week of September 5, 2022:

 

Tye Holsey, Ola, SS/CB, SR

Holsey is 6’1’ 200 LBS senior small safety and cornerback at Ola High School. He plays both sides of the field - running back, safety, cornerback, offensive linebacker and kickoff returner. Holsey was a 2021 First-Team All-Region in 5-A. In his junior season he had over 200 tackles, one interception, three quarterback sacks, five PBU(s) and four QB hurries. During the first two games of the season, he averaged 105 rushing yards, three TD’s, two interceptions, a pick six of over 100 yards and seven tackles.

He currently has received an offer from Morehouse College. He had an offer from Western Kentucky but the Coach went to Ole Miss. Outside of football, Holsey loves doing photography, running track, coaching younger players and cooking. He maintains at 3.5 GPA.

Will Lipsitz, Johns Creek, C/DT, SR

Lipsitz is a 6’1” 245 LBS senior center and defensive tackle at Johns Creek High School. He is a 2 1/2 year starting center and the only returning offensive line starter this season. Lipsitz has allowed only two sacks in his past 18 starts. He played through multiple injuries helping his team make it to the Elite 8 last season. New head coach Drew Connell describes Lipsitz as, “Blue collar to the core”.

When he is not playing football, he is captain of his wrestling team and currently ranked sixth in his weight class in Class 6A.

Jakarri Ponder, Cedar Grove, RB, JR

Ponder is a 5"11 200 LBS junior running back at Cedar Grove High School. He played his freshman year at Lovejoy, where he played in all varsity games and had a total of four touchdowns. Ponder previously played his sophomore season at Griffin, where he had an awesome season with nine touchdowns and over 500 rushing yards. He helped Griffin make it to playoffs last year by scoring three touchdowns in the game, with one sealing the victory in overtime. Ponder is a power back that is known to punch it in. He is a steamroller that will run over anything that gets in his way. 

Ponder has been to several camps, and has been told that he is on several college teams recruiting board, but no one seems to want to give him a chance. Back with Cedar Grove for his junior season, Ponder is once again showing the power back that he is. His mom says, he always says, "I just need one coach to believe in me, just one."

Off the field, Ponder is a dedicated student, and was nominated for the National Honor Society as a Sophomore. He also attends church, where he was recently baptized. In his off time, Ponder helps with his baby sister who has cerebral palsy. His mom says, he always tells her, "mom when I make it, I am going to take care of my family. You will never have to worry about money ever again." Ponder’s mom also says that every coach that has encountered him says he is built for D1 college football, but it just seems that colleges haven’t been able to see it for themselves and give him a chance.

Ryan Reno, Brooks County, K/P, SR

Reno is a 5’8 165 LBS senior kicker and punter at Brooks County High School. He started playing football his Sophomore year of high school, and midway through the season he decided he wanted to be a kicker and punter. Reno was only able to attempt one kickoff that whole year, but during his junior year he began rotating with another kicker in the same class. He was able to make 20/26 PAT’s that year and was used as the squib & pooch kicker for kickoffs. This year, he is the starting kicker and punter and hit the game winner against Coffee with four seconds remaining to make the game 24-21! In his game against Wayne County, Reno notched seven punts for 247 yards. He has no offers, but says he has worked hard for almost two full years of kicking and is still grinding to be the best. Reno says he remembers when he couldn't hit a PAT, but now he has a personal record of a 50-yard field goal and a hang time of 4.23 seconds for punts.

Germivy Tucker, Johnson County, RB, SR

Tucker is a 5’7 163 LBS senior running back at Johnson County High School. Last week in the 47-6 win over Warren County, he rushed for 212 yards, with 17 carries and three TD’s. Johnson County only allowed 43 total yards that game. In his first game this season, Tucker rushed for 131 yards, had 12 carries and two TD’s. He averages 11.8 yards per carry.

Jaylyn Weitman, Crisp County, LS, SR

Weitman is a 6’0 210 LBS senior three-year varsity starting long snapper at Crisp County High School. He has been long snapping since 6th grade and is self taught. Weitman has a consistent accuracy in both short and long snaps. His times are consistently between .76 - .82 with a personal best of .72 seconds. He says he is looking to prove that he has the skills and work ethic to be any school's scholarship snapper. Weitman says he knows that he will be a great addition to any program with his “never quit” motto and team first mind-set. He says he is not not just a snap and cover guy, but is also involved in the Cougars’ punt protection scheme and cover. Weitman says he would be grateful for any scholarship opportunity and have the opportunity to live out his dream as a college student-athlete.

Mikey Sheehan, Collins Hill, QB, SR

Sheehan is a 6’1 185 LBS senior quarterback at Collins Hill High School. He currently has one offer from Reinhardt.  He was 13-29 passing for 136 yards with two TD passes, plus 18-71 yards (actually way more than 100 yards rushing if you don't factor in the nine sacks he absorbed) leading the Eagles from a two-touchdown deficit in Collins Hill's 16-13 win over Brookwood on GPB.  Sheehan is 2-0 as the Eagles starter replacing one of the top QB in the nation Sam Horn who is now at Missouri.

Chip Cooper, Worth County, QB, SR

Cooper is a 6’0 183 LBS senior starting quarterback at Worth County High School. He went 14 of 18 passing for 197 yards and three touchdowns. Cooper also rushed for 54 yards and one touchdown. He is still without an offer and has lead Worth County to its first 3-0 start since 2004. The Rams will look to win Friday and be 4-0 for the first time since 1997.
