A Kennesaw State student was among those killed in Halloween stampede in Seoul

Kennesaw State University confirmed in a statement Sunday night that Steven Blesi, an international business major at the university, was killed in the stampede in downtown Seoul on Saturday.

Blesi was part of a study abroad trip with 11 other students, who were unharmed.

NPR reported that at least 150 people have died and over 130 were injured in Seoul on Saturday during a Halloween celebration. Many were trying to gather in a small alleyway filled with bars and restaurants. Blesi and another American, Anne Gieske, were among the dead.

“On behalf of the entire Kennesaw State community, our thoughts and prayers go out to Steven’s family and friends as they mourn this incomprehensible loss,” Kennesaw State University President Kathy Schwaig said. “We have been in contact with Steven’s family and have offered all available resources of the University to them.”

KSU said counseling would available to students.

Kelly Cho of the Washington Post tweeted a photo on Saturday morning of what appeared to be a memorial photo of Blesi hung near a subway station in Seoul.

The U.S. Embassy in Seoul is working with local authorities and providing consular assistance to any U.S. citizens affected, a spokesman told NPR.
