The breakdown
1. Today marks the 55th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination.
- King was in Memphis to supporting Black sanitation workers on strike. The day before, he delivered his famous "I've Been to the Mountaintop" speech.
- On April 4, 1968, Dr. King was shot and killed at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tenn.
2. Donald Trump will appear in court today.
- Yahoo News' Michael Isikoff reports that the former president will be charged with 34 felonies. Once Trump is arraigned today, the public will be able to see details in the unsealed indictment.
- Georgia's Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene will be present in New York City to protest. She's been once of the most vocal opponents of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who is prosecuting the case.
3. Wisconsin's Supreme Court election could forecast a 2024 presidential election.
- Wisconsin's state Supreme Court has traditionally ruled conservatively. While it's technically nonpartisan, today's election between Milwaukee County Judge Janet Protasiewicz and former state Supreme Court Justice Daniel Kelly could tip the balance.
- Should Protasiewicz win, a newly left-leaning court could challenge the state's 1849 abortion law and electoral district lines that Democrats claim are gerrymandered.
