The breakdown

1. The U.S. House sent a debt ceiling bill to the Senate.

  • In a bipartisan vote, the House passed a crucial debt ceiling bill to the Senate, five days before the Treasury's suggested deadline. Three-quarters of House Democrats and two-thirds of House Republicans supported the bill, which passed 314-117.
  • Of Georgia's House delegation, three Republicans and one Democrat voted against it. GOP Reps. Mike Collins, Andrew Clyde, and Rich McCormick and Democratic Rep. Nikema Williams all voiced concerns with the deal's compromise on spending.

2. GBI, APD arrest three bail organizers who funded anti-"Cop City" protestors' legal efforts.

  • Police on Wednesday arrested three key Atlanta organizers who have been aiding protesters against the city's proposed police and fire training center. 

    • Marlon Scott Kautz, 39, of Atlanta; Savannah D. Patterson, 30, of Savannah; and Adele MacLean, 42, of Atlanta, were charged with money laundering and charity fraud.
  • This comes after a lease-back arrangement was discovered in the training center budget proposal, doubling the public cost to $67 million.

3. Kari Lake will replace Mike Pence as the keynote speaker at the state Republican convention.

  • Lake, a strong supporter of Donald Trump, refused to concede after her Arizona gubernatorial campaign loss.
  • Trump himself will also appear at the convention, alongside several Republican hopefuls for the 2024 presidency.

 

4. Savannah’s original suffragist gets historical marker.

  • Mamie George Williams was a committed suffragist who supported voters’ rights and was a lifelong advocate for children, including the Girl Scouts.

    • Williams was also the first woman to represent Georgia at the national Republican convention.
