Ocmulgee Mounds National Historic Park, a treasure trove of (and dare we add iconic?) millennia-old cultures and history, recently underwent an expansion, further enhancing its historical significance. In 2019, the site was extended to encapsulate approximately 2,100 acres of rich historical land. This was further complemented in 2022 with the addition of another 952 acres known as the Ocmulgee fields, a site deeply significant to the Muskogean people. Another beautiful state historic site is the Etowah Mounds. The three large primary mounds are the most visible remains of the chiefdom of Etowah, a Mississippian settlement occupied from 1000 to 1550 C.E. Visitors are able to climb the mounds and interpretive signage will aid you to know what you are looking at.
