The Lassiter Trojans fell to the Peachtree Ridge Lions in a rainy first round playoff meeting.

It was a week of dominance by the top seeds in the first round of the playoffs…

Short of the Alexander win over Dalton, Cedar Grove’s win over Elbert County, and the Peachtree Ridge win over Lassiter (as seen on GPB), the one-seeds got out of round one in one piece. There were a lot of the 2/3 match-ups that yielded surprises…

Examples:

St Pius winning on the road at Hart County

Statesboro winning at Cairo

Stephenson winning at Flowery Branch (which makes you wonder just how much of the loss at Gainesville took out of them)

East Paulding representing their county with the win over Creekview

Lowndes win at East Coweta

Brookwood’s win at Lambert

McEachern at Newton (with Bailey Hockman at the helm showing tremendous poise for a freshman)

Fitzgerald surviving a mini-game and going to Dublin for the win and,

Kendrick shutting out Dade County…

So, let’s take a tour…

Sometimes, the best thing for a one-seed is to get a first round scare to wake them up and a reminder to focus on the post-season… Carver-Columbus got one of those playing BEST Academy (who was only in their second season overall and their first-ever playoff contest)

Friend of GPB, Dave Platta, has the rundown of that game and the rest of action in west Georgia in “Sports Overtime…”

On the east side of the state, Laney had one of those first-round scares as well with a four-seed in Cook (which really isn’t a 1-4 match-up), Westside had to travel to Thomasville, and Washington-Wilkes hosted Wesleyan (for starters)…

In the middle of the state, Warner Robins hosted Whitewater, Veterans had their first-ever home playoff game, and Bleckley County had the first chance to win a playoff game in almost a decade…

And, as we know to this point, Wes was not hurt in the making of the highlights above…

All of this cuts the playoff field in half and sets up some interesting match-ups in the second round…
