¡Vamos to the Carlos!
Primary Content
Children and their families had a wonderful time gathering together at the Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University last week to celebrate the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month. The afternoon of family fun was offered in conjunction with the You Belong Here: Place, People, and Purpose in Latinx Photography exhibition currently on display at the Museum. Children and their grownups visited the museum galleries where they viewed photography by Latinx artists from across the country. New York Times bestselling and three-time Pura Belpre award-winning illustrator and author Raúl the Third joined in the fun with special story time sessions featuring books from his popular ¡Vamos! series featuring Little Lobo and a cast of characters.
Visitors spent some time with GPB’s Early Education Manager, Christina Rand, who shared a special episode of Alma’s Way in which Alma explores community murals in her neighborhood. Feeling very inspired, attendees worked together with Raúl the Third to color a community mural taken from his book, ¡Vamos! Let’s Cross the Bridge. What a thrill it was to make art with a professional illustrator and learn about his designs first-hand!
Everyone got to take home PBS KIDS backpacks stuffed with learning activities, GASHA GO! World activity books, and information about many other GPB and PBS KIDS learning resources.
¡Vamos to the Carlos! was one of many events scheduled to take place at the Carlos Museum this fall in conjunction with the You Belong Here: Place, People, and Purpose in Latinx Photography exhibition that will be on display at the Museum through December 3, 2023.
