Revered Atlanta journalist Donna Lowry is joining Lawmakers as a Capitol Correspondent for this season’s coverage of Georgia’s 2019 legislative session beginning Monday, January 14.

The long-running GPB television program provides daily, in-depth reporting of the state legislature during the annual Georgia General Assembly session and analysis on issues including taxes, jobs, education, schools and the environment.

Lowry, who comes to GPB after working in television as a reporter with WXIA for nearly 30 years, will be part of a team that includes award-winning journalist Scott Slade. Most recently, Lowry served as the chief communications officer for Fulton County Schools in Atlanta.

“As a viewer, I considered Lawmakers a go-to source for in-depth news during each legislative session,” said Lowry. “Now, I get the opportunity to contribute to the show’s important storytelling as it spotlights the critical legislation that directly impacts the daily lives of people and communities in the state. I especially look forward to Lawmakers covering the day-to-day action following the historic election that brings a new Governor, Lt. Governor and other legislators under the Gold Dome.”

 

In addition to her work at WXIA, Lowry has held reporting positions in both television and radio. She began her career at KQV Radio in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and got her start as a television anchor and reporter at WEEK -TV in Peoria, Illinois. She also served as an anchor and reporter at WESH-TV in Orlando, Florida.

Throughout her career, Lowry has been recognized with numerous awards, including being inducted into the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Southeast Silver Circle. She has also received Emmy awards for her reporting from NATAS Southeast. Additionally, Lowry has been honored by the Georgia Associated Press, Society of Professional Journalists, National Association of Black Journalists, Atlanta Association of Black Journalists, Georgia Association of Educators and Professional Association of Georgia Educators.
