It is mid-November, 1864. Before leaving Atlanta on the March to the Sea, the Union army destroys railroads, factories, anything in Atlanta’s business district that may be of service to the Confederacy. Soldiers ignore Sherman’s order that churches and houses be spared; officers make no attempt to stop them. 40% of Atlanta is destroyed as the Union army marches out beneath clouds of smoke.
