Sergeant
Marine Corps
Mr. Lewis Schwartz was a Sergeant in the 3rd Marine Division. Though he trained to be a cook and baker, Mr. Schwartz carried wounded soldiers and supplied foxholes with ammunition during action in Guam and Iwo Jima. Mr. Schwartz shares his remembrances of the push at Iwo Jima, the decimation of the troops and a particularly moving story of watching another sergeant through himself on a grenade to save the men in his foxhole.
