The Loudermilk Conference Center graciously hosted our second Indie Lens Pop-Up screening this season.  On January 28, the community gathered to watch Razing Liberty Square, a film about how the Liberty Square public housing community in Miami becomes ground zero for climate gentrification.  The panel was moderated by Renee Mowatt and featured Adrienne Rice, Tiffanie Mackey and Valencia Gunder, who was featured in the film and is the founder and co-director of the Smile Trust.  The panel discussed climate gentrification and its implications in the Atlanta area.  While sea level rise may not directly impact Atlanta, those dealing with its consequences look to Atlanta for refuge.

Before the event, The Smile Trust hosted a Smile Day at Hurt Park.  This outreach program includes hot food, clothes, hot showers and other resources for under-resourced and unsheltered communities with the aim of bringing joy and happiness to our communities.  After, volunteers at the event were invited to celebrate Smile Trust's 9th anniversary in Atlanta.

Indie Lens Pop-Up is a neighborhood series that brings people together—virtually and in-person—for film screenings and community-driven conversations. Featuring documentaries seen on PBS’s Independent Lens, Indie Lens Pop-Up draws local residents, leaders, and organizations to discuss what matters most, from newsworthy topics and social issues, to family and community relationships.

GPB's next Indie Lens Pop-Up will feature Breaking the News, and will be on February 29 at Mercer University in Macon.  Click here to learn more and register!
