Did did she make the most of loving him?

Did you know that the Downton Abbey theme song has lyrics? No I didn’t either! The name of the song is officially “Did I Make the Most of Loving You.” Don Black, the legendary lyricist behind the Oscar winning tune “Born Free,” several James Bond movie theme songs and many stage shows, wrote the song.

Black apparently wrote the words a couple of years back after watching one episode. I wonder if that episode featured Matthew and Mary because it’s clearly an homage to them. For that matter, I wonder if Black had a vision that Matthew and Mary’s love would not survive past season three and really wrote this as their theme song? These words could very well apply to how Mary feels about Matthew’s untimely death.

You tell me what you think. Here are the lyrics for you to sing, along with a video tribute to Mary and Matthew with the music sung by Mary Jess, who croons the song on Downton’s official soundtrack. You may want to keep a tissue handy as you watch!

Downton Abbey Lyrics: Did I Make the Most of Loving You?

Did I make the most of loving you?
So many things we didn’t do.
Did I give you all my heart could give?
Two unlived lives with lives to live.
When these endless, lonely days are through, I’ll make the most of loving you.
I’ll make the most of loving you.

Did we make the most of all we had?
Not seeing you makes my heart sad.
Did we make the most of summer days?
We still have time to change our ways.
When these endless, lonely days are through, I’ll make the most of loving you.
I’ll make the most of loving you.
I’ll make the most of loving you.
I’ll make the most of loving you.

Did those tender words stay in my head?
So many things were left unsaid.
Did I give you all my heart could give?
Two unlived lives with lives to live.
When these endless, lonely days are through, I’ll make the most of loving you.
I’ll make the most of loving you.
I’ll make the most of loving you.
I’ll make the most of loving you.
