Georgia Southern clinched the 2011 SoCon title with a 31-10 win at Wofford. The Eagles (9-1, 7-1) rode freshman player of the week RB Dominique Swope, who rushed for 165 yards on 27 carries. The Eagles controlled the clock utilizing Swope and their stout rushing attack and were able to slow down the Terriers who were coming off of a 500-yard rushing performance against Western Carolina. Quarterback Jaybo Shaw rushed for three touchdowns and threw for another. The win gave the Eagles their first SoCon title since 2004 and broke Appalachian State’s streak of six consecutive championships. … Elon (5-5, 3-4) defeated Furman (6-4, 5-3) behind player of the week recipients QB Thomas Wilson and LB Joshua Jones. Thompson threw for 279 yards and four touchdowns on 20-of-26 passing as the Phoenix stunned the No. 21 Paladins 41-34. The signature moment of the game came in the fourth quarter when Thompson completed a 55-yard touchdown strike to Aaron Mellette to break the tie and put the Phoenix in the lead. Jones’ impact on defense was felt in all aspects of the game as he recorded 13 tackles, including four for a loss and a one sack. He also intercepted Paladins QB Chris Forcier and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to give the Phoenix a 41-27 advantage. Jones moved into fifth on the Elon all-time tackles list at 332 with his performance Saturday. Despite the loss, Forcier had a productive day. The senior from San Diego threw for 344 yards and three touchdowns. … This week, four teams will be on the road in the Southeastern Conference facing off with some of the best teams in FBS. Georgia Southern will face off with Alabama, the Citadel will play South Carolina, Furman goes to The Swamp to play Florida, and Samford will travel to defending FBS champion Auburn.
