Principal Bolden and me at the start of Career Day.

Today I have the pleasure of being a guest at Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy in Decatur, Ga for their annual career day. As I'm a strong believer in showing rather than simply telling, I will be live blogging during that visit. This will involve getting the students to help me write this post during the event to teach them the process of how to create blog articles.

Check back throughout the morning to see what the students and I come up with.

9 a.m. The program starts at 9 a.m. with principal Dr. Brian Bolden's opening remarks. Several companies and careers are represented including an anesthesiologist, a modeling camp, a minister and the High Museum of Art.

9:15 a.m. Crispus Conner joins me to contribute to the blog. I turn the computer over to him so that he can explain why he's interested in blogging in his own words. "I'm interested in blogging because I get to chat and my friends get to chat back thank you!"

9:30 a.m. Fifth grader Erika Brown took this picture of Frida Kahlo from the High Museum's table to add to the blog.

Here is what she had to say. "I'm Erika Brown. I am a 5th grader at Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy. I took this picture because it is a great piece of art. I like her unibrow. When I grow up I want to be a doctor.

10 a. m. Principal Bolden is so excited about blogging that I help him set up a blog account on the spot!

10:30 a.m. Ms. James' second grade class pays me a visit too. They are my buddies because I was one of their mystery readers in February. I gave them my photo/video recorder so that they could take a picture of one of the career day businesses and tell me about it.

They opted to take a photo of the Suntrust Bank table which I'll post in a moment because that's where Drake's dad works and they are interested in banking. Drake is one of the students in the class. This is what they had to say:

Here is their photo of Suntrust Bank.

Drake: "I like my dad's work because I like the way the office looks."

Kristen: "I like the job because if you don't have enough space you can put it (money) in the bank."

Wyman: "I like this job because at Suntrust you get to learn about money."

Other members of the class were impressed with the field of teaching:

Jazz "I like the teacher job because you can learn new things too."

Zykeria "I like the teacher job because we learn different things."

11:35 a.m. Here are more contributions.

Miguel: "I'm Miguel Ware. I am in the 4th grade. One job I like is to be an actor."

Kayla Woods: "I am Kayla Woods, I am in the 4th grade. I really liked the part about webpages. It was interesting because of how they do things and how they put things up. I would like to be a fashion designer and make up artist."

Kalesia Daniel: " I am Kalesia Daniel - I am in the 4th grade. When I grow up I am going to be a teacher and dancer and that's all!"

Amir Knighton 4th grade - a scientist, surgeon, nurse or chemist.

Quavious: "My name is Quavious. I love to play football. I like every part of career day and last year I got to play football at Career Day."

11:45 a.m. Career Day is officially over. Principal Bolden thanked us for exposing his students to careers they may not have thought of and for encouraging them to be the best that they can be! And for inspiring the next generation.
