A Middle Georgia Soldier has been killed in Afghanistan while serving in the 48th brigade.

Staff Sergeant Alex French IV of Milledgeville died on Wednesday in Kwhost, Afghanistan when his unit was hit by an improvised explosive device. This was his second tour of duty with the Georgia Army National Guard.

Before his deployment French worked as an officer with the Bibb County Sheriff's office for seven years. The department has ten employees currently deployed with the 48th.

Bibb County Sheriff Jerry Modena says French worked at the Law Enforcement Center in Macon and was one of their best officers:

"Some of his co-workers summed it up that he was always punctual, on the job. He was pleasant to work with, diligent and certainly one that we eyed to bring up the line with promotion."

French deployed to Afghanistan in May and was scheduled to be gone for a year. He leaves behind his wife Shanoca and three small children, a one-year-old son and four-year-old twin daughters.
