The Region 6, Class 4A cross country meet was held Saturday at Marist High School. The top four teams from each division and the top 10 individual runners go on to the state meet, so a huge opportunity was at stake. John Ewing of Lakeside-DeKalb edged out James Dwyer of Dunwoody and Matthew Weber of Marist with a time of 16:42 to win the varsity boys race. Marist, Lakeside, Dunwoody, and Southwest DeKalb all qualified in the boys division for the State Meet. Individual qualifiers were John Ewing (1) and Brent Reynolds (6) from Lakeside; James Dwyer (2) and Kyle Sexton (8) from Dunwoody; James Weber (3), Michael Thurston (5), Scott Selvey (7), Ben Campbell (9), and Porter Harrast from Marist; and Jared Williams (4) from Southwest DeKalb.
In the girls division Sophie Harkins of Marist ran a personal best and region-winning time of 19:02. Marist, Lakeside, Dunwoody, and Southwest DeKalb all advanced as teams. Individual qualifiers included Sophie Harkins (1), Kate Northrop (3), Tori Andrews (8), and Erin Connolly (9) of Marist; Alex Cameron (2) of Dunwoody; Meghan Wetterhall (4) and Hayley Keadey (7) of Lakeside; Greciana Cooper (5) and Mercedes Perez (10) of Southwest DeKalb; and Matty Wetterhall (6) of Chamblee.
The boys St. Pius X team competed on Saturday as well, only at the Last Chance Invitational at Carrollton High School. Brendan Hoban ran away with the individual title with a blazing time of 15:57. St. Pius X won the boys Class 4A race as a team with a total of 29 points. The second place team was McIntosh, a distant 41 points away.
