The supervisory ranger of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge says a wildfire in the swamp has burned 1,400 acres.

The ranger, Arthur Webster, says the fire is being called the Honey Prairie Fire and is in the southwestern area of the swamp. It was discovered on Friday.

Webster says favorable weather and low levels of fuel have kept the fire spreading slowly with flame lengths of four feet or less.

The fire is thought to have been caused by a lightning strike and is burning in vegetation left dry by an ongoing drought.

Webster says all refuge entrances are open to the public and guided boat tours, canoe and kayak rentals, access to hiking trails, interpretive centers and boardwalks remain available to visitors.
