Governor Nathan Deal’s office is fending off criticism over his appointment of Georgia’s new mental health ombudsman.

Corinna Magelund will serve as an advocate for the mentally and developmentally disabled.

Some question her mental health experience, and point to her relationship with the Governor’s spokesman.

But the Governor’s Chief Operating Officer, Bart Gobeil, says Magelund is qualified for the job:

“She has a very thorough and unique understanding of working within state government from some of the highest levels. The position is going to require her to advocate on behalf of individuals to ensure that they are being heard at the highest level of government.”

Magelund previously served under former Governor Perdue, and more recently in the Department of Community Affairs.

State law requires the position to be nominated by committee. Gobeil could not confirm the process by which Magelund was appointed.
