The city of Columbus is offering up to $1,000 for information that helps catch copper thieves.

Copper theft is on the rise in cities around the country. An estimated $2 million worth of copper was stolen last year in Columbus.

These thefts also caused a large amount of property damage.

Thieves target air conditioners and rental properties with copper wiring or plumbing.

The reward fund is financed by tax-deductible donations from concerned citizens and business owners.
