Georgia College & State University plans to begin offering its first doctoral degree program in May.

The school in Milledgeville on Wednesday announced that the doctor of nursing program will admit up to 12 nursing professionals. The program was approved by the University System of Georgia's Board of Regents last spring.

The five-semester program is set to begin with a weeklong "immersion experience" in May.

Applicants to the doctoral program need a current, valid registered nurse license and a master's degree in nursing or anesthesia from a nationally accredited program. They also must have at least 500 faculty-supervised, clinical hours in a graduate program.
