Police say a girl who accidentally shot herself in the leg at a midtown Atlanta high school has been taken to the Fulton County Jail.

Atlanta police spokesman Carlos Campos says the 17-year-old Grady High School student is charged with reckless conduct, possession of a pistol by a minor, disruption of a public school and carrying weapons within a school safety zone.

Authorities say the girl shot herself in the leg Wednesday morning and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition. Campos says the shooting happened outside the school between buildings on campus.

Campos says the gun belonged to the girl, but he did not know if the girl had the gun inside the school at any point.

Police recovered the gun — a pink, .380-caliber Taurus pistol.
