A middle Georgia animal shelter has been quarantined after five puppies were euthanized in response to the spread of a highly contagious virus.

Macon-Bibb Animal Welfare Shelter Director Sarah Tenon said the dogs were euthanized to prevent Parvo virus from spreading. The virus can take two forms and either attack a dog's intestines or its cardiac system.

A man who recently adopted a puppy says she began vomiting and defecating on the way home from the shelter. He said he took the puppy to a veterinarian, she was diagnosed with the virus and died three days later.

The shelter recently held an Independence Day adoption promotion and waived fees for spayed and neutered pets.

Tenon says one other dog at the shelter has tested positive for the virus.
