Crews are searching for a teenager who disappeared in the Atlantic Ocean near a sandbar off St. Simons Island along the Georgia coast.

The Brunswick News reports that 16-year-old Treyus Coleman has been missing since Sunday evening, when the tide began coming in and the water began to rise. Treyus stepped off the open ocean side of the sandbar, went under the water and did not resurface.

The Florida Times Union reports that the Brunswick teen is believed to have drowned. The two friends with him at the sandbar were rescued by a kayaker.

Glynn County Police Chief Matt Doering said he would ask the County Commission for $2,000 to post new signs warning of the dangers of the sandbars, where others have drowned in recent years.
