Powder Springs Police

Police in Powder Springs say officers in the town northwest of Atlanta are now wearing body cameras.

Police said Tuesday that the cameras, which were purchased in November, are now being worn by every uniform patrol officer.

Powder Springs Police Chief Charlie Sewell said in a statement that the equipment enables police to serve "in a transparent manner," which benefits the officers and the community.

Body cameras for police officers have been discussed in communities nationwide following the Aug. 9 death of 18-year-old Michael Brown, who was shot by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed announced that the Atlanta police force will soon adopt body cameras through a new pilot program.

The White House this week announced that it wants more police to wear cameras that capture their interactions with civilians.

Powder Springs is about 20 miles northwest of Atlanta in Cobb County.
