Longtime Georgia Department of Transportation executive Russell McMurry is the new commissioner of the Transportation Department, effective immediately.
The 14-member State Transportation Board elected him today. McMurry will oversee a budget in excess of 2-billion dollars and more than 41 hundred employees.
McMurry is a Hart County native. He has worked for the Georgia DOT since 1990, when he joined as a civil engineering trainee.
McMurry succeeds Keith Golden, whose three-year tenure was marked by increasing fiscal challenges with tight budgets and a growing list of transportation priorities. Golden also took some heat for his role in the disastrous state response to last January’s snow storm.
