A Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police officer is being dismissed after being accused of stealing from the federal bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.

Police Chief Jack Lumpkin told reporters Wednesday that former Corporal Daryle McCormick was working on an ATF task force when he allegedly stole cash, televisions and computers. McCormick is also accused of giving some of those items to former chief Willie Lovett.

Lovett is serving time in prison in a separate case. He was convicted earlier this year on gambling and conspiracy charges stemming from his time as chief.

Lumpkin called McCormick’s actions “reprehensible.”

"The details of this case are frankly troubling, and embarrassing. Not just to the individuals involved, but to everyone who wears a badge on this force," he said. "I want to apologize for the behavior, conduct and performance of those associated with damaging the public trust our citizens and visitors have a right to expect from their police officers."

Lumpkin has asked Savannah’s City Attorney to look into civil action to recover the money and property.

A federal criminal investigation is ongoing. Lumpkin says police will work with the District Attorney to decide if state criminal charges also should be filed.
