A youth detention center in Milledgeville is the latest casualty of state budget cuts.

Georgia’s Board of Juvenile Justice voted to close the Bill E. Ireland Youth Development Campus by the end of the year.

The YDC employs more than 300 people and state officials say closing it will save $18.5 million.

Milledgeville Mayor Richard Bentley says he will talk to state Senator Johnny Grant (R-Milledgeville) about appealing the decision to Governor Sonny Perdue.
