DeKalb County could soon be home to two new cities, if voters today approve the creation of Tucker and LaVista Hills.

Briarcliff Baptist Church sits in the southwestern portion of what could become LaVista Hills, an oblong stretch of currently unincorporated DeKalb County just south of Interstate 85.

Donna McCauley lives a few miles away from the church. Her vote on whether LaVista Hills should become a city?

“No,” she says. “We have enough layers of government, I think, and we just need to fix the one we have.”

Daniel Wenger, another resident, says he voted the other way.

“I voted ‘Yes’ on LaVista Hills,” he says. “There’s a lot in our community that, I think, we can exert more control over.”

Today’s vote comes in the wake of the recent corruption allegations plaguing interim DeKalb County CEO Lee May.

Earlier this year, a report commissioned by May himself said he and other county officials had improperly spent taxpayer funds, among other transgressions.

However, another referendum before DeKalb voters today could strengthen the county's ethics board. Namely, by taking the power for appointing that board away from the county CEO and commissioners.

Polls close tonight at 7:00 P.M.
