Supporters say the bill simply extends the Second Amendment right to bear arms to public colleges and universities.

Opponents of the measures, like Rep. Karla Drenner (D-Avondale Estates), said that's a decision that should be left up to schools.

"Just as outsiders should not dictate what questions a teacher may ask or what answers a student may offer, schools should be given the authority and discretion to set policies that shape the academic environment in which teaching and learning will occur," Drenner said from the House floor Monday.

The bill does have limits. It would not allow concealed handguns into athletics facilities or student housing.
